I think it made for a much more climactic encounter, and you should remake the character if you want to. However, in the Year of Twelve Warnings, 1494 DR, Thavius's deal with Zariel was set to expire; he knew the exact time and made plans to be out of the city when the Companion ceased to protect it. He was brutally killed by the wendigo that hunted in the Wolf Forest in the summer of 1106. Disguised as a refugee, Thavius Kreeg was one of the first of his people to arrive at Baldur’s Gate with news of Elturel’s “destruction. So there are a few questions about this grand play of Zariel’s and how it might be attempted again in Baldur’s Gate. Thavius Kreeg is one of the examples where the changes make logical sense (especially to lore) but yet another zarelite cultist rather than the one that actually doomed the city feels less interesting to play with while also somewhat feeling like it's missing out on a chance to use the themes of Choices, Deals, Sacrifice and Redemption.
